Consistently, one of the most asked questions we receive via email and Instagram DM is about the sizing of our bouquets and vase arrangements. So, what’s in a size, and what size is right for each occasion or gifting purpose?
Recently at Poho, we’ve consciously tried to shift the conversation away from size and more towards meaning and impression. We find it’s best to begin with a conversation about who the gift bouquet is for, why you’re gifting it, and what impression or lasting feeling you hope to convey with the bouquet or vase arrangement.
As a trusted online florist in Sydney, we aim to make every gifting experience personal and intentional, whether you visit us in-store or choose flower delivery to Sydney CBD and surrounding areas.
Some Background About Pricing and Bunches
Almost everything we purchase from the wholesale markets is sold by the bunch, with the exception of a few floral items purchased by the stem. When displaying flowers in our Double Bay flagship, we always showcase them in these bunches with a bunch price. That said, when composing a bouquet or vase arrangement, we’ll often split a bunch or take a few special stems from another to create a cohesive and interesting design. This allows us to be more playful with our compositions and include a few extra special touches for that distinct Poho feel. We want every delivery to feel unique, personal, and curated.
Where to Start the Conversation
First and foremost, who are the flowers for? A friend, partner, colleague, a date, or maybe they’re just for you? Whoever they’re for, ask yourself what brought you into Poho and what feeling or emotion you’d like the flowers to convey. This is where the conversation with your florist will begin. It helps us understand colour palettes, flower choices, scale, and composition style, and also whether a wrapped bouquet or a vase arrangement is most suitable for the occasion. It could be a few keywords or a specific feeling, but think about this before you arrive. This emotive language and sentiment are what help ignite the creative process.
Floral Materials
Different flowers and colour palettes convey different moods and meanings. Sometimes it’s thoughtful to choose something the recipient would love; other times it’s more personal to share something you love and explain why you chose it. Maybe that’s a vibrant palette that suits their warm personality or a refined neutral mix for someone elegant and understated. It could even be a scent that stirred a memory or emotion you think they’d appreciate. Either way, trust your instincts and make the choice with intention.
Size
Sizing often comes back to one thing: money. Try to think about it less in terms of dollar value and more as an extension of the feeling or sentiment you want to express. A small gesture can be just as impactful as something lavish or extravagant. It all depends on the occasion. Choosing the right materials for every budget is where your florist steps in; it’s about doing the most beautiful and thoughtful thing possible with the budget on hand. That doesn’t always mean scale or size. Sometimes the most special and exquisite blooms are expensive and come in small bunches. Ultimately, it’s about what you think the recipient (even if that’s you) will appreciate most.
Presentation
Wrapped bouquet or vase arrangement, it’s a matter of personal preference, and both are beautiful. Insider tip: if size really matters to you, a wrapped bouquet is often more visually impactful than a vase arrangement. There’s just something about those endless ruffles of Poho blue paper.
A vase arrangement is a thoughtful and practical presentation. It’s ideal if you know the recipient doesn’t have a suitable vase, or if they’re in hospital, have just moved house, or might be overwhelmed and not up for unwrapping and arranging flowers themselves.
A quick note: wrapped bouquets should only be out of water for a maximum of four hours. Flowers, like us, get stressed and dehydrated without water, so it’s important they’re placed in fresh water as soon as possible.
A Lot to Think About, Right?
That’s why we always suggest starting this process before you step in-store. Giving yourself time and space to think about these details makes the experience more meaningful. Or better yet, come visit us, take a seat in our lounge area or simply stand in the flower circle and immerse yourself in the beauty of Poho. Surely that’s inspiration enough?
While we compose your bouquet, take a seat, have a glass of water, and write a thoughtful card message.
This is all part of the joy of gifting with Poho, whether you walk into our Double Bay boutique or choose to use our online florist Sydney service for flower delivery Sydney CBD and surrounding areas.
