About this experience

Covering 385 hectares, it is a site of high ecological value incorporating the largest remaining area of endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub as well as a threatened population of Long-nosed Bandicoots. Here, AWC works in partnership with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust to deliver a suite of science projects within North Head Sanctuary.

Join us on a guided tour where you’ll discover what makes North Head so worth conserving. This includes, most notably, an endangered population of Long-nosed Bandicoots, Barking Owls and Powerful Owls. Like the rest of Australia however, North Head has also suffered the local extinction of a suite of species over the last 200 years including the Eastern Pygmy Possum, Eastern Quoll, Swamp Wallaby and Bush Rat. The reintroduction of locally extinct species is therefore a critically important step in the ecological restoration of North Head.

During this special field day, AWC Wildlife Ecologists will brief you on AWC’s science program at North Head which is focused on the conservation of surviving native wildlife and the return of locally extinct species such as the native Bush Rat (cuter than you would think), Eastern Pygmy Possum and the Brown Antechinus. You will learn about a range of projects AWC is implementing to help restore the biodiversity of North Head, including the critically endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub.

We look forward to welcoming you to spend time with AWC field staff and learn how AWC is helping to restore our natural assets to this iconic headland on Sydney’s doorstep.
